Chiappucci’s Attacks Can’t Crack Indurain
The arrival of Spaniard Miguel Indurain as a superstar began began with a victory in the 1991 Tour de France . Big Mig came to the 1992 Giro d’Italia to face a group of dominate Italian riders.
After Indurain won the 38 km time trial on stage 3 he put on his first Maglia Rosa. He gained a decisive advantage on the stage 9 finishing climb of the Monte Terminillo by dropping all the major GC contenders. The most important gain was +30” on superior climber Claudio Chiappucci.
The always aggressive Chiappucci was not done and attacked the race leader incessantly on the final climbing stage 19 to Verbania. Indurain did not crack and matched every move.
To cap his Giro victory Indurain won the final individual time trial into Milan, catching and passing his 3 minute man… Claudio Chiappucci.
SPECIAL NOTE: Miguel Indurain won the Giro in 1992 to set-up his first of two “Giro/Tour” double victories in the same year.
